sure can, the tires will chirp and drag around corners, will cause more wear on your tires. It will bind and can pull when on the street accelerating. to each there own but I would not weld the rear end of a DD, or vehicle that see's a lot of street.

i have a comanche that i drive on the street everyday with a welded rearend, its not as bad as everyone says as far as chirping goes and all that. the only thing i dont like about it is im worried the rearend is going to come around on me while going around a corner at 70. axles are cheap as hell welded and try it out.

yea you stand a pretty good change of exploding the spiders on the rear end, but they can be replaced

It is true that people make it out to be worse then it really is (most never tried it either)

Just like any other mod you will have to change some driving habits.

If you weld them right the spiders won't go anywhere. My diff looks like a softball is stuffed in it.

If the spiders go good chance the gears will follow unless you clean it out right then and who does that.
