Hello all,
I have a 1988 cherokee. It has all lites instead of gauges and i would like to know where im supposed to put the probe for the temp gauge. It is a 4.0L without a block drain. It also has the closed cooling system. If it helps I did get a universal gauge pod with batt. oil and temp. Oil and batt i can do. please help someone that likes seeing gauges instead of red lites lol thanks all

You have 2 choices - 3 if you want to deal with the headache of the light's sender in the back of the head and either having the light on or pulling the cluster to take the bulb out.
Ghetto (I know it is kinda hard to see but you get the idea):

Few options, from easiest to most difficult
1) buy a new CTS - the one for the gauge instead of the dummy light, and install in the threaded port on the back of the head (Jeep Part #53005309). Then connect your gauge and go.

2) Do the same thing, but install the sensor in the thermostat housing like the above poster suggested. Harder since you'll need to tap a new hole.
3) Splice the sensor into the upper rad hose. You'll need a T adapter fitting, and there is a good possibility it will leak with a pressurized cooling system. Not advised.

You could swap your Cluster for one with gauges, I did it on mine, it was easy and you get a rpm gauge. You would have to swap the oil sender and temp sender.

I did the cluster mod and on my '96, there's a sensor positioned on the top surface of the head just behind the rear edge of the valve cover right above where you drew a yellow circle - I thought that was the gauge temp sender that needs replacing. Is it? If not what is it?
