Default Upgrade alternator

I'm going to upgrade my alternator to a bigger amp one. What year of zj am I asking for at the parts store and will I have to replacing the pulley also or does it have to have 6 rings or have 5. If it has 6 do I use the first 5 starting from the engine out or vise versa

I'm assuming you have a 97 from your username. You'll want the 136A alternator from a ZJ with a 5.2 (93-98). Keep the pulley you have now, it will be easier that way. I'm not sure if the pulleys are a different diameter or not on the ZJ but when I did my Durango alternator they were different.

I did this swap about a year ago, the ZJ pulley works fine, just use the first five ridges. I've had no problems out of it.

Damn that just $5 more than I had in a used Durango alt bought from the JY when I had it rewound to 160 amps at a shop, good info.

Same, I just used the new one. Once the belt is tight enough, it doesn't know or care that there's any ridges beyond what it uses.

===> Madmanmarty, is the back of your alternator (wire hook up wise) same as the lower amp ones? I am looking to get a new alt for my 1988.

Yes. It's in the original housing, rebuilt for 150 amp.
So install is identical to OEM.

Hi guys, after searching the forums, it seems that people have more questions than answers about the swap. Do any of you have a write up?

I have an 89 and would love to upgrade.
I don't mind a little grinding to FIT it in, but would prefer one that plugs in (or at least has minimal rewire).
