Default Turboing a jeep

Well... my buddy and I have passed the idea around of having a the best sleeper in town.

Turbo charging his dads old 93 2 wheel drive.

Now this kid is a complete gear head, but knows little about jeeps.
I know a fare amount about jeeps, but nothing about boost other than how the work.

I can fab up a header in a few hours, slap a few pipes around and boom-bam turbo jeep... not an issue.

The main concern are:
-How much boost can the engine hold? How much power can the block hold?
-What are we gonna do about fuel-air? I know their is piggy backers, but is there a tuner that will work with the stock ECU that can adjust fuel/air easily? I know a few people would love me a lot more if i had one

For starts this will be a straight header-turbo-intake and in a few weeks it will have a 2-core intercooler.

As of right now we have a VW turbo we are going to use. Very small spool, lots of low end power from the turbo.

We don't really care to much about the engine. I can got a spare I wont be needing and I know a few people.

oh and this is for ****s and giggles... and might very will be scratched.

Not really sure about the 4.0 specifics... I know more about forced induction on an LT1 F body.

It would need to be tuned since there is no air metering device. Also would have to figure out what to do about the MAP sensor. The stock one will work on vacuum and some types of MAP sensors freak out when met with pressure. If you run low enough boost you might get away with a stock'ish setup and a tune by someone that knows what they are doing....as sometimes it is difficult to find someone that can tune an OBD1 computer.

Hope that helps a little.

Ive seen a few turbo builds. There are some on Pirate4x4 and NAXJA, they arent coming up on simple google searched so you will have to find them. They are full of info, from cheap slap on a turbo all the way to metal head gaskets and custom engine management

well heres the thing... a little t3 from the 1980s at 15 psi will push way less air than a newer GT35r at 5 psi

a common misconception is that an engine can take a certain amount of boost... but the truth is that it is different in EVERY case

that being said, the fat that you are even asking this question tells me that you are not quite ready for this

many things effect how much boost you can run... but you need to keep in mind that there is a point when running more boost actually lowers power because the turbo is running so hot that it is unusable

here is a list of things that effect 'how much boost you can run'

TUNING!!! (better tuning might allow you to run more boost, or even use less boost and get even more power)

the type of turbo

fuel pump

injector size

type of fuel (no more running 87 octane, welcome to the world of 91 or better)

air temp (both in the atmospher and after the turbo compresses the air)

there was a local guy selling a turbo'd xj a while back and i think it was running about 8-9lbs of boost, to me yea it would be cool but not really worth it if ur only running 8 lbs of boost. better off installing a stroker.

Run a Megasquirt for the fuel management. Built one for my Chevelle, and it works great and is not too difficult to tune. I have an extra set of 34 lb/hr injectors that are good for 50-70 HP per cylinder depending on fuel pressure and Brake Specific Fuel Consumption.

As said before there are tons of variables. you need a decent size t3 or good t3/t4 hybrid to keep up with the 4.0. a hy/hx35 holset from a cummins would work pretty well and are cheap and plentiful.
I did a turbo kit on my brothers 22re toyota pickup. ended up using an 034 motorsports aditional injector controller. I pun an extra 1000cc injector in the intake near the throttle body. it has a built in map sensor. works great. upgrade fuel pump and away we went.
I would not run over 7-8 psi on that size turbo, maybe 8-9 max on a smaller t3. that s assuming that it is intercooled.
also I will not build a turbo kit without a wideband gauge. I prefer AEM.
if someone wanted to turbo and did not want I wideband I wouldnt do it.

the splitsec box works real well, along with a wideband obviously.

we use the splitsec boxes on the supercharged JK's we build and havnt had any issues at all. very simple to tune

Where I am at, it is rare to have temps over 90 degrees ever.

Yes we could stroke it... but that block in my garage for my jeep
and we already have a lot of the parts.

The manifold isn't that hard to make. I have 2 cracked ones sitting in the garage, just cut 3 inchs down the pipe and log it... not difficult if you know what you're doing. It will take a few hours of actual work, not planing... and it will be a log style
