Turbo?
I want to put a turbo on the common inline 6 4.0L engine for my 2001 xj. I just have a few questions for some of you first.
1) How much will it cost?
2) Does it help with mpg?
3) What kind of turbo should I get?
4) Will I need to get a new chip for the engine?
Also the Jeep has a 4" lift and is sitting on 31"s

price wise, idk of any manufactured but you can fab one up yourself, no on gas mileage, and yes you the reprogram the ECU so it will work and spool the turbo the properly, honestly it's a waste of time and money, too much time and resources will be wasted on this project
Agreed
As I have been looking into all things +power related for a long time.
For the time/money stroking comes out as the best option and in second (even though it could cost more than Turbo or stroking) is supercharging.
Why wait for power when you step on the gas

[QUOTE=xjTylerXj;2116810]How much would it cost to have it stroked though?[/QUOTE
And how long will it take?
How will you tune it?
$4,000 and 1 day of easy 'bolt on' will have you supercharged.

First off I would research and research whats best for YOU. also look into turbo builds with 4.0L's, and see how its been done and there cost, as it can very pretty wide depending on parts and how resourceful you can be gathering them.
1- Could cost a very wide range... what kind of setup? junk yard parts or new? i would bet the range would end up being $2000-3000 depending on how resourceful you can be on collecting parts for a reliable setup.
2- It can help with MPG as it used a waste (exh) to create power, but most people like to feel the added power and end up wasting more fuel..
3- That all depends on what kind of spool time, power range? high end? low end? how much CFM you want to push into your motor...
4- You will need a new programing system, not 100% on how to do it with the 4.0L, typically this is an expensive step
onto other ?'s.
Mine cost me just under $2000 replacing/upgrading everything including sensors, I assembled and installed. its a hard answer to come up with... what setup? a poor mans 4.6L? a 4.7? a 4.9? a 5.0? what cam? crank? rods? pistons? machining needs?
as far as time? how much $$? pay someone else to assemble and install? or do it yourself? how competent are you(the readers) at assembling and installing engines? that comes down to you, your space, your time, or your wallet to pay someone else to do it.
I had my engine removed, assembled, and installed in a 13-14 hr time frame. (could be 1 day) I assembled a spare engine before I removed mine. making the down time about 7-8 hours.
As for tuning. the stock ECM can handle a stroker motor within reason. Mine is a 4.6L with higher compression, I have a wide band gauge hooked up for accurate live fuel trim readings. its dead on where it should be for proper engine "tuned" perimeters.
for more detailed and specific info go to jeepstrokers for tons on info about stroking an engine.
IMHO adding a turbo to a car is not cheaply done, when it comes to big power adders there is - big Power, reliability, cheap... you have to pick 2, as the 3rd is not possible.
Lots of people think a turbo will be cheap, its really not it nickles and dimes you through the proses. worth the end result, but if $$ is already a concern or budget very limited its not a path I would recommend.

When I've read up on forced induction, the fuel management seems to be what gives everyone trouble. Just reading about it gives me a headache.
