Hey guys so I was trying to install a manual switch for my override fan so I could turn it on and off when I was on the trails, Bought some 10g wire some connecters and a switch, well I was listening to my girlfriends dad who has previously worked on cars, so my original plan was to just jump the Temperature Switch connecter, (Tricking the switch its above 216 and turn on) but what happened was he advised that I run two wires one as a ground and one as a hot, so I grounded what we thought was the ground, the B wire. to the body. and then ran what we thought was the hot wire to my aftermark on/off switch, then ran a wire from the ground to the ground connecter on the switch, Turn the key on, Turned the Switch on, *POP* and some smoke started coming from the right side of the motor compartment, Now I have no gauges, when I turn the key to on, the fuel pump does not start up. the only things that have power are the lights. where should I start? I've replaced some of the relays hoping that was it and nothing.

Update- replaced all my relays and starter relay. Still nothing, all the dome lights come on and headlights, just no engine bay power.

Did you check all of the main fuses?

I'd start by removing all that fancy wiring you've attempted. Then, I'd stop listening to your father in law because he has no idea what he's doing. lol

hahaha you're right there, yes I've checked all the main fuses, I mean I was reading somewhere that it could be a fusible link? But I'm totally lost when it comes to wiring systems.

Yes, it could. I'm not very familiar with the early model wiring systems either. I'd have to sit down and study wiring diagrams. You need to do the same thing. You'd be looking for fusible links and other fuses or relays on that same circuit that you were messing with.

If you clearly saw smoke and heard a pop in the engine bay I'd guess that it should be pretty easy to find a burnt wire.

Yeah I figured that would be an easy thing to find, my girlfriend was the one that saw the smoke and said it came from around the mechanical fan area, So I checked the Alternator over thinking it could have blow that. but like you said I'll just need to study some wiring diagrams but any help would be awesome, I also look at some other wiring that looked like it came from the starter relay. and nothing look out of usual besides being grimed up from 25 years of dirt.

yes I do, it's a cheap craftsman one but I honestly don't know how to use it, any recommendation?

Yeah, I had to leave the jeep at my girlfriends house because I live 90 miles away and had to work this week so any help or tips I can get I'll use this weekend to try and diagnose whats up. I know its got to be a burnt wire somewhere or fuse. Just a matter of finding it :|

Links are on starter relay. Check for power on main stud on relay.

After all this, the "override" fan you speak of is the small electric fan that comes on with A/C or over 210 degrees correct? without installing any wire or switches or relays... you could turn on the A/C and set the temp. on the red heat side, that way the fan turns on but the compressor does not run.

It turns on at 217. That fan will only run under that condition or if the compressor is on. If you run the heat the compressor still runs.
