transfer case/Driveshaft upgrade
So I have an 86 Cherokee xj 2.8L (yes the crap 2.8 but runs solid) with an NP207 transfer case with the stupid cv front driveshaft stick in a can..FML! How the hell do I convert it to the u joint driveshaft and what exactly do I need to buy to do it...I'm dumb & poor!

I'm having trouble essentially figuring out what yoke and driveshaft will work sadly. I've essentially been doing a junk yard build. There's not allot of helpful info or support for my model

Novak says the NP207 is the predecessor to the NP231. If so the front output yokes might be compatible. On the 231, you can swap yokes from outside, without opening the transfercase--remove the yoke nut (lots of torque) and then pull the yoke (steering wheel puller works).
From there you would just need measure the length between the transfer case and axle yokes, and find a shaft that is 1" to 1.5" shorter. I don't think you'll find anything that is correct fit from the start, since the 84-86 models were slight shorter wheel base so the front driveshaft is going to be a little shorter than later years. But you might find something, like a shaft from a manual trans or a 4-cyl engine, or something, that would have a shorter front shaft close to what you need.

This is perfec, there are 231's all over. Thank you very much. Its not the popular of the xj models with the 2.8L but it's runs amazing and has zero rust so I just couldn't pass it up you know.
