I just bought a 1998 jeep Cherokee limited. I have wanted a jeep for a long time. The transfer case is bad. It is the np 242. What all transfer cases can I use and keep my tranny?

91 and up 231s and 242s will be 23 spline like yours. Stick with cherokees because grands used different length input shafts on some models.

Thanx man. I did buy a 242j out of a 97 grand Cherokee Laredo with the 4.0 today. It was a really good deal and if it doesn't work I can get my money back.

Worst comes to worst you can swap the input and you'll be good.

If it don't work and you buy another make sure its from the same motor you have... don't buy a 4 bangers 231 for your inline 6 kinda thing...

If it's the same case driveshaft will be fine. I swapped a 249 with a 242 and later a 231 in my old ZJ and used the same driveshafts each time. Tranny makes a difference in driveshaft lengths as well as axles.

He didn't mention what grand Cherokee he got it from... 99-04 use two different kinds of front driveshafts and both different then zj's... I'm sure he got a zj's but that's why I asked...

The difference in the drive shaft is on the axle end, cv verses u-joint, the t-case bolts up the same. Done that swap too.

My 99 WJ had a different driveshaft on the transfercase side then my 04 and both were different then my 89 xj... I dunno... were all 4.0's but the 99 had the factory tow package... doubt that plays a part in it... and a Guy I parted the 04 out to that wanted the front driveshaft couldn't use it... wouldn't work for his bit can't remember what year his was...wj's were weird... trannys were even pretty much year sensitive... like the 99 and 04's were different
