Default trans swap

So I have a 2000 Cherokee sport with the inline 6 and a bad automatic trans and I have a 86 with a 4 cylinder and a 5 speed with the age difference and the engine size difference would it be possible to put the 5speed out of my 86 in my 2000 without an adapter kit

No, the transmission would not fit the engine as it is a different bolt pattern, among other issues.

That 5spd is junk anyways, you wouldnt want to even if you could. Check the gearing on the diffs though, you'll probly be pleasantly surprised

If you want a manual trans, look into the NV3550.

In your quest you'll need a couple things. Most important is a 4.0L bellhousing to fit a manual transmission. This will have to come from a 4.0L Jeep newer than about 1990. External slave cylinder started in 1995 or so and is preferable. Then you can use an AX-15 from a Jeep or Dodge Dakota. NV3550 is a great transmission but hoarded by the Wrangler crowd (read "expensive"). NV3550 was the factory stuck in 2000+ in all Jeeps until 2006 or 2007.

Of course there's clutch and computer stuff too but that should get you started. Pile of threads on doing an auto-to-manual swap
