Have a 1990 jeep cherokee with np 242 tc and wanna swapped in my 1992 has a np 231 tc both are automatic is there anything I need to look at to see if this is possible
1990 2dr auto tc242 with no sye wheeler
1992 ho 4dr auto tc231 with sye daily driver

 

It won't work the 92 case u have is a 23 spline and the one in the jeep now is a 21. I just went threw this and got a 231 from a yj with 21 spline.

 

It will work if but not bolt on, you'll have to disassemble both case two swap out the input shafts. Or go to the jy and get another input shaft. There are some differences length is the most common, and I believe the bearing size may be different. Oh and be aware of gear cut round vs sharp edges on the planetary and input shaft. Better option is to find another 231 21 spline and do the sye and do upgrades. The wide chain ans sprockets and 6 planetary gears since your in there.

 

i got mine out of a 95 yj with a 4cyl. i did the sye kit just need to install it and put the new linkage in, don't forget that.
