toyota rear axle in an xj
is a toyota axle any upgrade from a c8.25? if so..what's best, yota axle or d44?

I'd much rather look into the 9" rear. but yotas front and rear isn't exactly the worst plan in the world. they're pretty stout. but unless you're buying some already built with gears and longfields I'd pass on the idea. there are better options
as far as just a rear alone, eh. too much hassle with 6x5.5 for me to bother with it

A close to stock width 9 inch would be mid 70s back and those are hard to find at a good price.The bolt patterns depends what its from can be 5x5 5x5.5 5x4.5.But currie has a 9 inch housing and axles for a xj its not cheap but ready to go once you weld on the spring perches and shock mounts and 3rd member.
