Default Tires to keep stock flares

Decided on 4.5" lift just was wondering what backspacing i would need to keep stock flares with 10.5" wide or 12.5" wide tires

Tire diameter will have more effect on it. I have 3.5" of lift and 31x10.5x15 tires on factory 15x7 rims with 5" of backspacing. In heavy articulation, the tires make a little contact, hasn't damaged the factory flares though. 4.5" of lift you should be fine with a 32", or a 33" if you extend the bumpstops and stick with a 10.5" wide tire. You're going to need less backspacing (~4") with the 33s though, or you're going to be all over your control arms.

I have a 3" lift and 31x10.5 with Unique 297 wheels unsure of backspacing and width 15" diameter and they throw water and mud up past the flares

I'm running a 4.5" lift with 32x11.50-15's on 15x8 wheels with 3.75 backspace. w/o adding any extra bumpstop, I knocked my factory flares clean off up front. If you properly bumpstop, you should be fine. If not, you'll blow them off under hard articulation.

Backspacing isn't going to keep the tires out of your fenders. You will likely need to bumpstop. Put on the lift (if you haven't already) and tires. Put a jack under one corner and jack it up till the tire hits the fender or bumpstop (whichever occurs first). If it hits the fender first, the gap (plus some) under the bumpstop is how much you need to extend it. Your setup isn't going to be perfect right away, you'll have to tweak it. And I would recommend wheels with about 4" of backspacing.

I have 32x11.5R15s with the RE 3.5" Super Ride lift. Wheels are 4" back space.

No rubbing but I do not flex too much and do not use disconnects...

I guess I should add that I do not run sway bars. That makes a huge difference. If I was running sway bars, it would not have rubbed.

With trimming in key areas and bumpstops you could have a 33x10.50 on stock backspaced wheels tuck in the flares. Might have to adjust your steering stops to avoid control arm/ inner frame rubbing when steering. Big tires take some work and sacrifice to run on an xj if you are afraid of trimming.

I dont think my statement before was understood im not worried about ripping the flares off with heavy articulation im worried about if they are going to stick out past the stock flare and not pass inspection this is my DD so in that case what backspacing would i need in oreder for this to pass inspection with 32 x 10.5 x 15 tires

Stock should be fine, if you want less backspacing, I wouldn't go with any less than 4.5". 4" is an extremely popular setup for xj's, including my own, but they stick out about and inch or so, again, depending what width tire you run.
