33-35" and tires come to personal preference. Treadright tires are cheap for what you get
I like Goodyear mt-r Kevlars, everyone says they work great and they look sweet

What do you plan on doing with the jeep? Mud, rock, dd, light trails? Depends. Cant go wrong with 33-1250's.

Yeah I have the kevlars, do great in heavy rain, ice, snow, mud, and clay and I've had them for about 6 months and I've put a trip to Colorado and 4 trips to Dallas on them and the usual 15 mile trip to work and back everyday and they still look brand new

Only downfall to the 33" MTR-k is that they weight the same as the 35" flavor.

Depends on what you're going to do with the Jeep. With a 4.5" lift, I'd put some 35's on it, I like the KM2's.

with 4.5 of lift, you CAN put 33 or 35" tires. like it was mentionned earlier, it depends on what you want to do.

With 35's you can forget about super flex and tight corners without serious other mods.
With 33s you can flex with factory style suspension and it will rub but its shouldn't stop the jeep from mooving. Steering will still be restricted.

Of course many will argue over this one, but if you are going for functionality over looks, I wouldn't go over 33's and even then, I would go with the narrow ones. I went with 34's (metric size) that where 11.5" wide. and it looks great.
My turning radius was the pits, I had to restrict my well designed custom suspension from travel significantly because it would rub enough to actually stop forward momentum.

Compromise? Big and narrow... If you go on trail runs, you will see what works. don't be surprised if you see someone with 32's outflexing and going more places than 35's (unless its a clearance problem... or deep mud)

Like everyone else said, What are you planning to do with your XJ?

I have had really good luck with Hankook Dynapro MT and ATm tires. The MTs don't look that aggressive, but work great in just about any terrain. The ATm tires work great for an all terrain as well.
