I know that most inline 6 diesel engines use timing gears instead of belts or chains. I'm guessing for durability. Is there a way to convert the 4.0 to gears? Any advantage over a chain? Belts are for pants. Just a curiosity question really. My XJ is double duty, off road fun and driven to work when the weather requires it!

No need. They rarely need a timing chain.
