Possible timing issue?
I have a 1993 Cherokee spt. straight 6.
I was replacing the distributer cause the pin was thrown and almost broke off inside. I got it out without it breaking off. Installed the new one, top dead center, had plenty of compression, could smell gas, but wont stay running for more than 10 seconds making all kinds of bangs, and pops.
Replaced the plugs, wires, ignition coil, distributer, timing set. Installed the timing gears and chain to the book. Still seems like the distributer is off a groove, But I have tried a million different variations for the last 2 days. Still wont run long enough to put the timing gun on it. Still wont run right?
Ran the computer and no codes came up.
I'm at my witts end and about to send her to the shop.
Any Ideas would be great!

Nice fault, Was this the fault prior to the work on the distributor or is this a secondary condition after the work you already did. How did the teeth look? Was there any wear?
Could be a clogged cat if this was the existing fault at least that is what it sounds like to me.

The cat was clogged prior and it blew a 3" hole in it.
I was driving it and all of a sudden it made lots of banging and popping from the exhaust. It lost power and died. I put some heat up and drove foward and back for 10 minutes after letting it cool down for 30 minutes and cleared up enough to idle normal, but couldn't drive over 25 mph without it cutting out and dieing.
I drove her as far as I could get then a buddy toed me for 4 miles home.
The teeth looked fine, very little wear at all.
Teeth are aligned point to point caddy corner to eachother. Turned to top dead center and there are 15 pins from point to point, as the bible said.

I think you have a diffent problem then. I will scratch my head a lil and see what i can think up. In the meanwhile could you be running to rich. Broke a tip off an injector or something.
It sounds so much like timing. Seems off a degree or so.
Definately rich. Tried to advance and retard the distributer.
Had it purring like a kitten and the dist. jumped on me before I could set the bolt and went back to square one have not had it that close since.
I wondered about the injectors, but could smell gas and bled fuel from the fuel rail. Checked the fuel pump.
What gets me is the first thing I thaught of was bad gas. This all happened after I got a full tank of gas. But drained the gas, looked and smelled normal.
No water spots or contaminates

Hmmm maybe it is timing but off a tooth one way or the other the vehicle should still run longer than 10 seconds. Camshaft Position sensor? I own renix so mine don't throw codes would yours if it was bad?

I read this thread,http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=101119 it's great info! Still I found nothing that hits the nail on the head.
Other than the computer, or wiring. Everything seems right. I'm so confused.
Really hate to take her to the shop as I already dumped $400 in her this weekend.
I had a horible 4 day weekend with this project!

Did you check the compression on all 6 cylinders? Is it possible it bent a valve or 2 when the converter plugged and it backfired. I had a Ranger plug up and it actually broke a piston along the side and under the rings.

It still sounds like the dizzy is off one cog on the drive gear to me. Run the compression test and if that checks out OK try the dizzy advanced one tooth or retarded one tooth.
