Some guys install them without removing the TC. Its more work to remove it but it makes the install easier to do.

It's much easier to get the snap rings off and back on and to keep everything clean while its on the bench. I'm almost done putting mine back in, it's not bad at all.

Dont be fooled, I got the same SYE and installed it with my TC still in my Jeep. It was no worries at all. I had never done it before but used you tube and about 5 hours I was golden. Just make sure you get a NICE set of snap ring pliers.. I mean nice.. NOT THE MOST EXPENSIVE ONE AT HARBOR FREIGHT- Go spend 30$ on a good set that comes with different ends.. It makes a world of difference. Most trouble I had was the snap rings but after I ran to home depot and got a good pair/ it was a breeze. The instructions are garbage (not even a picture really) so just you tube it and you will be fine. I did mine about 6 months ago.

I can't picture not doing it on a bench. you have to take both drivelines off anyway. it's only 6 more bolts, shifter linkage, and a couple sensors after that. I try to avoid any and all possible frustration. for me, it's just easier to work with when it's out. there's also less swear words involved

This can be true..Haha.. Honestly it was still very simple with it in. My XJ was lifted 7" inches on 35's though at the time so I could pretty much sit under it and do this.

ah. yes. that's a factor too. I'm 6' 3" and my jeep wasn't as tall. I need to be standing up for this sort of thing. twisting my back up under a jeep for extended periods of time is no bueno

but if you've got a jack and some jack stands you can change that scenario pretty quick

If you can get the jeep high enough so that you can comfortably sit under the jeep and work, leave the TC in place. if you have to lay down I would pull the case.

Left mine in, 5.5+/-" of lift. Just sat under thare & was super easy to do. As said above, get a Good set of pliers and you'll be golden.
