SYE Help?
So i just put a 4.5" lift kit in my jeep and did not purchase an sye. It has come to my senses that my drive shaft vibrates and that i need one. What all will i need? I know i will need the SYE kit but do i need to get a longer driveshaft? Any help with be great thanks

yep, longer DS is needed, try tom wood drive shafts. Advance adapters sell SYE kits for $200 and u can add in a TW drive shaft for $300 more

im confused some people say its too short some say it will fit. do i NEED a longer DS in order to stop the vibrations

the new drive shaft is going to look like the front shaft but it will be longer to accommodate lifts from 4-9". plus the end the hooks up to the T-case will get rid of the SY that is currently on there and replace with a regular 1310 joint

Every XJ and and every lifts are different, it might work with one but not the others. My 1993 XJ front 4.5" rear 6.5" no SYE just the TC drop and has no vibration. Installed PORC SYE and front DS in the rear, no vibration.

to get the proper measurement for your new rear drive shaft your jeep must have the yoke installed on the rear end and the newly installed SYE or Hack n tap. you must start your measurement from the middle of the u-joint near the middle bottom of your driveshaft (or from the tip of the yoke if your shaft is not installed), to the middle of the other u-joint (or the tip of the yoke if shaft not installed).
as you can see in mine i have a measurment of 34". this means i need a shaft that is between 33"-32.5" collapsed. you want an 1"-1.5" of slip in the shaft showing at ride height.
now in all cherokee driveshafts, the short part of the drive shaft is always the same length, so i know that i needed (for the long side measurment) a 21.5" of length in the long side. to measure for the long side (when searching the junkyard) you measure from where the shaft connects to the yoke, till the beginning of the welded part (see pictures).
what i mean by the grand cherokee to cherokee conversion, is that some grand cherokee front shafts have this stupid looking disc at the end of it instead of a u-joint. i simply ripped the short side shaft on the driveshaft off, and tapped on a cherokee short side of the driveshaft. unsure the yokes line up before you do this.
the one i used was in this pic, as it had the double carden joint at the t-case side and the CV at the axle side, i simply swapped the cherokee short side on the front of it and it turned out like the top one. the type of cherokee you want to get it out of is a V8 cherokee with an auto and with the NP249 t-case (all time 4x4) it has the longest shaft
example of grand cherokee shaft on bottom, conversion on top:
i just took that stupid looking thing off the front, and slipped the short side of a cherokee shaft on. you will need pretty much the same size as i do, as your measurement is pretty close. so i would look for a 34.5"-35" shaft (or 22", give or take a 1/4", long side if doing the conversion). hope this helps, and good luck searching!

I put an SYE when i converted mine to 4wd. Which having the Tcase out of the jeep made the install super smooth. Honestly it isnt too hard to install in the tcase but if you spend the money on an SYE you might as well beef up the driveshaft. Sometimes its better to spend the extra cash. I have problems with my new rear driveshaft and ran my front shaft as a temp until it was fixed.

okay. Lets clear this up because he is obviously confused.
go to the junkyard, or ebay or classifieds here, buy a FRONT driveshaft (for the front of a jeep) from a cherokee with an automatic transmission.
Use that with your SYE of choice, it will bolt in, it will be perfectly long enough and it shouldnt cost more than 50 bucks for the shaft vs paying 300 which is ridiculous.
As for SYE's it depends on what your mechanical ability is, most SYES involve taking the transfer case apart and replacing the output shaft.
If you get a hack and tap SYE. You will be removing the 4 bolts holding the cone on the back of the transfer case, removing the cone, tossing it, cutting the output shaft down and drilling / tapping a hole in the end of it, before bolting the yoke that will bolt to the driveshaft to it.
So basically, you do not need a longer stock style driveshaft, because they suck. You need a front driveshaft on the rear, because they are double candon and better in general.
it takes about 2 hrs to do if you take your time, and the total cost should be between 150 - 225$
which is a ton less daunting than 500 + which is the cost of another jeep lol.
