Default SYE ?

So I have a lifted cherokee. Woooo hooo. Good for me. Lol
I have decided the PO was shooting for 4 inches in the front. And I'm assuming 4 for the rear as well.
So my question is, I've read a ton on SYE'S and I've come to the decision to buy one.
Pros and cons?
What's actually getting improved?
Is it worth it and will it actually help me not grenade a driveshaft?

Do you have driveline vibrations? That's the main reason for getting one.

SYE is to get rid of driveline vibrations. If you don't have any, I wouldn't bother. That said, there are two ways to do it: hack and tap or replace the rear output shaft. The hack and tap is easier but not as good. The other option is better as it is stronger and also makes for a longer rear shaft, making for better driveline angles. Replacing the shaft isn't too bad, but is involved. To replace the shaft I would recommend pulling the transfer case and doing it on a bench. BleepinJeep has a good video on youtube for replacing the shaft.

It's never a bad idea to install an SYE with any lift over 3" period.

Does it all have to deal with the angle? Is a cardigan joint that much stronger?
I had that set up on a full size bronco and I snapped that thing every six months.

I'm not to driveline savy.
I know straighter the better. That's about it

It allows a better driveshaft angle probably stronger then the factory slip yoke plus allows ya to run on only a front shaft in an emergency.

This x2. If you grenade the rear shaft you can remove it, throw her in 4 high and drive. Or you can swap the front to the rear (4.0 AW4 NP231). You only have to carry one spare shaft and it'll work front or rear. Plenty of benefits to installing an SYE.

Perfect, good to know. Do you have to get a longer rear shaft with the sye? Or does a stock front fit? I know it depends on the size of lift but generally speaking

I bought a custom rear shaft for mine but I carry a spare front that will fit either end if one breaks.

I have a 90 4.0 with 231 TC and an 8.8 rear axle, I pulled the stock front shaft from an automatic. Fits good. Have put couple thousand miles on this setup, runs good.
