Default switching to cvs

i have a 99 xj and my u joints are going out. I really don't do that much offroading anymore and when i do its very light duty stuff so i wanted to put cv axles into my jeep.... my question is which cv axles will fit? My buddy told me that a 99 gc cv axle will work....is this right?

You do realise that the U joints take a total of about an hour for the pair to replace them from start to finish, Not to mention the price of the parts is cheaper then you can get CV shafts from a Junkyard for. Also if you do decide to replace the axles for CV's you'll probably want new ones not used theres no telling how bad they are if you get them used.

U joints are definitely the way to go. Cv's are only a decent upgrade if they're new. Guess how much the rubber boot and retainers for the cv axle shaft in my sister's zj cost, not even a new joint but the boot that keeps grease and dust apart. ~50$ guess how much a new u joint, which as said can be replaced in about an hour, costs? I can get an auto zone joint for 15 bucks with a lifetime warranty.

Would you really even notice a difference?

Stick with ujoints. Cheaper, stronger, easier to maintain.

Yes CV axles will fit. If it has an ABS tone ring you will have to remove it.

Keep the advice found in this thread in mind though.... Replacing the U joints would be a fraction of the price. You can take advantage of a loan a tool program for a ball joint press to get your old U joints apart. Heck I would bet by the time you get cores and replacement shafts you could hire a machine shop to replace your U joints.

When I replaced the U joints in my XJ there was a massive improvement. Honestly for $30 you should try replacing the U joints... you could always sell your shafts and upgrade later if you want... 96+ D30 shafts are very desirable.
