Default swap to diesel motor

Anyone ever heard of or done a motor swap from the I6 to a HMMWV 6.8L twin turbo? I am years away from doing it just wondering if it has been done, I like to do my research first. Before everyone starts bashing me for it understand that I have driven and worked on them during my 7 years in the military, the 6.8L is a solid motor if it is taken care of just like any other motor.

Its a 6.5 detroit diesel and a single turbo. If you want a off roader it would be a bad idea to use it.It will add over 200 lbs to the front end making the jeep more nose heavy. The only diesel worth the swap in a xj is a vw tdi its light and makes enough power for the xjs weight.

If its a 6.8L then I must be loosing my mind because I thought they were 6.6L Duramax's that they let Banks create a new setup for. Aka twin turbo, big turbo, etc. Idk I was in the Marines for 5 years and they were just only introducing the 6.6 duramax into the rigs, and most of them were 6.5 Turbo Diesels. Idk maybe you have numbers mixed up or you have had 1 too many HMMWV Armored doors fall on your head. Either way there is no way to put one in without introducing a independent front suspension in to compensate for the weight. So basically if you took a Chevy/GMC 2500HD's front suspension and beefed up the rails maybe but even then wouldn't be really at all even feasible due to the size of the engine and you would have to do something about the rear because it would way to light and you would have that thing being a burnout queen the second you try taming your first rock with it. All in all don't think about it or even try it unless your willing to have the first 1 ton XJ rock crawler when your done.

The duramax 6.6 is 900 lbs that's double the weight of the 4.0.The allison trans it would need is another 500 lbs.Only way i see it working is taking a 1 ton frame and shorten it down to shove the jeep body over it.

First time you got on the gas you would twist the cherokee up like a pretzel the unibody can't handle the power/weight

Even the tdi motor is a bad idea, diesels are too too heavy for an already top.heavy vehicle..

As it was once explained to be, that'd be like trying to put 10 lbs of **** into a 5 lb bag. The engine is waaay too huge for the XJ chassis. You'd need to modify the uniframe quite extensively to get it in there in the first place, never mind accessories and plumbing. And with any engine making that much power you're looking at a lot of reinforcement so the Jeep doesn't end up like a twizzler.

There's a reason all of the diesel swaps are small inlines like Cummins 4BTs, Isuzu 4BD1T, VW TDIs, and Mercedes OM617.

Please don't post such rubbish if you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

VW 1.9L (ALH TDI): ~440 lbs
Jeep 4.0L: ~520 lbs
Mercedes 3.0L (OM617): ~550 lbs

^^ As far as I'm aware HMMWVs are still using the old GM 6.5L design (I'd hardly call it a Detroit), not the Isuzu/Duramax 6.6L.

There is so much bad information on the internet. Salad is correct, the HMMWV still uses the old GM 6.5 turbo diesel. Some of the newer Hummer H1s actually did get the 6.6 Duramax, although it was detuned to not grenade the 4L80 transmission that was put behind it IIRC.

This is besides the point.. that sick-five is fairly pointless to swap in. At their best they only made a shade over 190 hp. If you do want to make power, it's not going to last.

Swap in a smaller inline like what has been mentioned previously if you want a diesel. Save yourself the time and money.
