Default Super Swampers

Anyone run them? Bias Ply vs Radial?

Tread depth is 24/32. How many miles can I expect out of them on an XJ?

Looking at a 33" tire

I have run both. I prefer the bias off road. Ride is horrid. It's all relevant but expect 10-20thousand.

And I am talking the tsl, sx, ltb types. I have no clue about the more street able tires they make.

I had ltbs for a little while. I bought them used with 20/32s and when I got rid of them 7k later they had 8/32 amazing offroad but onroad not good. Bias ply was the worst of it, got flat spots from sitting overnight.

I love my bias TSLs but I don't drive it on pavement, trailer queen. I've ran TSLs and Boggers, both bias on the street and they wear fast. 33s are usually OK but the larger tires don't tend to be all that round, more oval, so balancing is a chore if you care about that sort of thing. Never ran any of their radials.

I have had a few different sets of swampers. 33x14 boggers 33x15. 5 tsl sx 37x12. 5 ssr radial and now 35x12.5 ltbs. The radials ride and drive like real tires. The others are awesome off road and have thick sidewalls. They get flat spots sitting and take about 5min to warm up and get round again. Boggers will last maybe 8k mi on the road. The other bias plies appear to be around 15k. They are heavy as ****. Each one of my 35s weighs about 100lbs on a rim. Which I like. I had a tree branch jammed into my bead on my current tires. No problems. They are thick. I ran the 15.5s on 12 inch rims and had to go to 5psi no beadlocks to get them to flex. My 12.5s are on 10in rims and I go to about 10 and they flex. The sx sidewalls are about an inch thick. The ltbs are about 3/4.

Thanks for the replies. I guess that rules them out. Will go BFG AT KO or MTR2

Thanks

Since I retired the xj from dd duties the swamper went on it. Nothing looks as mean as a swamper or does as well in the mud.

I can't even stand the look of a mt any more. I will replace a set every year if I have to rather than run a mt.

LOL

It is tempting and I know what you mean, but I think an AT tire would suit my needs better.

Swampers must be a really soft rubber tire to only get less than 20k out of 24/32 of tread depth.

damn. stepping down from wanting a swamper all the way to an AT?

I've seen iroks do decent as an all around tire. all the other swampers dont really have a place on the west coast but honestly it's hard to beat a modern day MT. they can get about 30k on a daily driver and they do great off road. that's where my money will be untill I get a trailer. the only problem is the sidewalls are a bummer. but as long as you dont go shoving them into fallen trees you should be fine

Well funny thing I guess. Swampers are not the best off road tire by a long shot. But they do have their attributes.

You are probably the wiser for not purchasing swampers. Expensive as heck and wont last on the road.

For me though sometimes being unwise is a lot more fun. LOL

Yeah, I am not a hard core off roader like some here. A 33x10.5x15 BFG/AT KO is fine for me. I have 235/75/15 BFG on it now and am impressed where this thing will go on an open rear end. lol

It just makes sense to me to have a tire that has a decent tread life but capable off road. Most of my off roading will be on actual trails and farming roads anyway.

I'd still go with a kevlar, km2, or any of the MT's similar to those. AT's are fine in the 31" flavor maybe. hit some mud on those roads and you're gonna wish you had something with more bite

From what I've noticed, radial Swampers (like the irok, trxus, m16, etc.) do pretty well on longevity. My dad has bias Swampers on his 'burb in the 38" flavor, and while it doesn't exactly rack up a whole lot of street miles, they've lasted pretty well, and ride decent for what they are.

There are some long lasting MT's and "hybrids" out there though. I've had Cooper STT's on my truck for about 6-7ish thousand miles, and I can barely notice any wear. I've heard that GY duratracs last a long time as well.

My .02

Always need more traction, but on the long road home and the other 95% of my driving I will be happy I chose the AT

If you want a reliable/capable tire, the Durratracs are great. My fathers set on his JK just passed over 70,000 miles and are at the point where they need to be replaced. I had a set last me about 50,000 on the XJ.

Ive ran ThornBirds (absolutely terrible tire), LTBs and TSLs. The TSLs lasted the longest of the 3 at about 15,000 miles. If it spends most of the time on the dirt, it might last longer but I usually drive 300-500 miles a weekend to go wheeling/backpacking etc and the swampers just don't hold up.

I had a set of Kumho MTS that lasted quite a while- they were just terrible on the ice/snow so I got rid of them (great in the mud/street though).

After these treadwright guard dogs finally die, Im going to try out the Fierce attitude MTs... Look like a slightly more aggressive duratrac.
