Stuck in 4wd?
I thought I had posted this earlier but can’t find it. So, if this is a repeat, sorry. I have a 99XJ (np 231) that is stuck in four-wheel-drive. I understand they can be somewhat finicky but despite multiple attempts I can’t get it into 2H. Here are the pertinents:
1.This occurred immediately after installing a slip yoke eliminator kit
2.The SYE kit was installed immediately after installing a 3 inch rough country lift
3. It is full of fresh fluid
4. I have forward and reversing and probably every combo both on pavement and on jack stands with no results
5. Goes into neutral and 4L just fine
6. I got under it and made sure manually that it was not a linkage issue and was truly shifted in the two high.
My gut tells me that I made some error installing the SYE kit although it seemed to go fine and I followed all the instructions. Hoping someone else has a brilliant idea before I have to pull the transfer case which would be significantly less than ideal.
Thanks in advance,
DK

I once found the shift linkage bezel to be so packed full of coins that I had trouble shifting. There were some coins that were bent from me forcing the shifter into 2H.
Might want to pull that trim piece off and look under there. It just pulls straight up.

I had a similar issue when I installed my son's SYE on his TJ. We removed the transfer case to do the install and I didn't put it in the correct gear before disconnecting everything. I think you have to have it in 4H or something like that, but we pulled the transfer case while it was still in 2H. It shifted fine prior, but after we reinstalled everything, it took a lot of force to get it to shift. Ended up taking the transfer case back out and basically starting over. Not sure what I did, but made sure to have it in the proper gear (Both the shifter position and the transfer case position) and that solved the problem. Was not fun.
Thanks for everyone’s input. Yeah, I’ve tried it moving, stopped, going forward, going backwards, LOL I think about every possible combination. Also, I got under it, disconnected the linkage, and shifted the transfer case manually into 2high but still nothing. I think I’ll pull the front driveshaft so that is functional and then plan to pull the transfer case back out when I have enough “want to”. So far i’ve manage to take a perfectly functional vehicle and make it not very functional🤨 so I need a little break.
