Default Steering grinding

So, my xj has been making this grind/vibration when I turn the wheel slightly left and right, but when i turn it farther, it stops. I noticed this after having to remove the box to get my bumper on, but on of the bolts broke, so I rolled around for about a month with only two bolts on. So after replacing the bolt, and having it on correctly, it grinds. Sounds similar to when you drive on the grooves in the middle of two lanes on the highway.

My initial guess is the steering box or differential, but what else makes grinding noises while steering? Everything is tight, doesn't clunk, and is greased well. Also, it's barely noticeable below 50 or so mph. Anyone got anything for me to look at,

I dunno. They're all probably about ready to get replaced, but they all look in decent shape. I'm having my mechanic buddy take a look at it tomorrow. Haven't had time to do anything, working 12 hour shifts since Wednesday as a restaurant manager/ server is time consuming!

I looked on Alldata at some TSBs on XJs. There was one talking about the drive shaft rubbing when the driver would turn the wheel. My guess is check out your front drive shaft and see if it is rubbing, just tak a look at it and see if there is any bare metal. If there is, you've found your culprit.

Rubbing what? Wouldnt the front end have to move "like without a track bar"?

It's pretty weird but it says that some XJ owners found the front drive shaft was rubbing on their upper control arms as they turned or braked abruptly. So yeah, it was like they didn't have a trac bar at all.

haha I jumped my XJ 200 feet in the air at the dunes and now it's making the strangest noise! The weirdest part is it looks like the axle has shifted to the right 4 feet!
