Has anyone ever put in a better speedometer, maybe with 120 mph limit instead of 100 or 85
Or can you modify the stock one for a higher speed?

You can try and find an instrument cluster from an XJ that has a police package, they have a higher MPH speedo in them.

I don't really have any desire to go any higher than 85 in my XJ as it's not really built for speed (although I do admit to having topped it out once lol), so I modded my gauges to do this instead.

The newer ones, I believe, are electronically limited. But, with the older ones you can go faster than the speedo shows.. GPS helps. But really why do you need to go that fast in a cherokee, unless you are racing and are capable of going that fast in the conditions.

Thanks!
I had to remove the gauge cluster and take it apart one gauge at a time. After all the gauges were out, I removed the two screws that hold the gauge faces on. After those are off and the gauge face is hanging freely, you can slide an overlay over the needle and on top of the gauge face. You will need a pair of tin snips to cut a notch off the gauge face to allow the overlay's wires to run freely.
After all of the gauges are done, put them back in the cluster and Take out all of the bulbs besides the hi beam indicator and turn indicators.
Run all of the overlay wires out of one of the existing bulb holes toward the rear of the cluster and plug the connectors into the overlay's inverter. The inverter will then need power. I chose to crimp eyelets to the positive and negative lead wires. I then unscrewed the ignition screw and ground screw that hold the ammeter in place. I put the eyelets on the screws and proceeded to tighten everything down. I have the overlays wired so that whenever the key is in the ignition, they are on.
After it's all wired up, firgure out a place to mound the switch for the overlays, it will control the color of the backlight (blue or green) along with brightness.
All that you have to do from there is reinstall the cluster and it's done!
Here's a link to where I got my overlays

Let me know if you have any more questions. I'd be happy to answer them.
