The intake opening that you will have to drill will be at least 3/4" from the inside bottom of the cowl. Putting a lip on that will probably make it whistle too.

There are drainage areas on the sides of the cowls. I've had this kit for alittle while and no water problems. Just clear off any huge piles of snow that would form over night (obviously you would anyways). Ive parked on a hill downward in pouring rain, no problem. Spectre thought out this design pretty well and the company seems to know what they're doing.
Hey OP, did you even put any sound deadener in the cowl? I just took a the jeep for a snowboarding trip and the intake gets a bit loud climbing up the mountains. I would love to be able to quiet it down a bit.

I myself haven't tried anything like that. I would assume it would work. It is louder when it's cold out though.

You would have to put it on the firewall but it will be loud unless you insulator everythings. A lot of noise transfers through the window and door and floor. I don't think just insulating the firewall will do a lot
Hey guys im running a spectra cowl intake on my 96 XJ aswell, but i modified it a little bit this weekend because whenever it would snow the cowl vent would ice up and not let the motor breath.
I picked up a 3in wide 90* aluminum pipe, a 4in pvc cap, and some self tapping screws and this is what i came up with
-
Cut the firewall, cowl, and cowl vent so i could fit the pipe in
-
Bed lined the pipe and cap and went for the test fit
-
Tossed the cap on and this is the final product
Solved the icing problem and reduced the intake noise drastically

I've had mine for a couple years now and I don't notice the sound much anymore. Long as your light on the throttle it stays pretty quiet. The cabin air intake is right there in the cowl on the passenger side. If you wanted to quiet it down out together something to hold a filter element over it. That would help the noise a bit.

I did a custom cowl intake shortly after reading this thread 3 years ago with pvc right into the drivers side of the cowl and I barley noticed a sound change, still fairly quiet. I'm sure you could technically get up behind your dash and put dynamat or somthing similar on the inside of the firewall but that's way too much work in my opinion, like No4x4Yet said just turn the radio up haha

i would pefer the box, that way IF any water did get in there it would go into the box rather than straight down my throttlebody. i made this with about $30 and a few hours to fab everything up and silicone any possible leaks. not quiet as loud as the video link, but still sounds cool.
I like this...... Is that the rubber Dryer Hose? and did you just cut the hole into the air box slightly smaller than the hose and twist it in? Also curious on the cowl side. looks like a dryer vent flange for a wall?

I will put my .02 in on this thing. I ran it on my rig for about 2 years. It has resulted in permanent damage to my engine.
The problem is that the design can let sand and debris be pulled in at the cowl. I have no flares and open wheel wells. When I would hit deep mud holes the splash on the hood would travel into the cowl and get pulled in by the intake. The mud and Sand here in MI is very fine and can seep into the cowl.
The hole into the cowl was drilled as high as it could go to clear the hood (still rubbed the hood at the weld) and stay as far up on off the cowl floor as possible
The debris would clog the filter and the engine had enough pull to collapse it. Despite my cleaning efforts this happened at least 8 times.
The collapsed filter has allowed enough crap into the intake I assume it has now scoured the pistons at the intake side. I am now burning oil like mad 4qts in 500mi , >
Many have used it for years and probably don't have this problem, but it is possible so be careful. Best bet buy/ build a full snorkle.

[QUOTE="DortDizzle;3162606"]Despite my cleaning efforts this happened at least 8 times. /QUOTE] shoot, that's pretty bad. How often were you changing/cleaning your filter?
I had the idea of rigging up some kind of pre-filter to go over the hole in the cowl.
