that is debatable....
to awnser that question you would have to see the power band at both given rpm's and consider load/drag. the extra 500 rpm is faster moving momentum, also could put out mroe power with less fuel. just because a vehicle is at a given rpm does not dictate the fuel that is supplied. its a lot more complicating then rpm. for example. do you get better gas mileage with
33's and 3.55's?
or 33's and 4.56's?
with the 3.55 you have less leverage and use MORE power(gas) to do the SAME work the the 4.56's because the 4.56's don't need as much power because they have more leverage.

very similar final drive between it and the jeep and right now its running 33s i can tell you for a fact i got better gas mileage with 4.10s

4.56 gears and 33 inch tall tires get me 18mpg on the highway even with 6 inch lift, lots of heavy armor and lockers front and rear. I don't think you could do much better than that with my same set up. Plus the guy who said 4.56 gears are good forward thinking when moving from 33s up to 35s is thinking exactly what I am thinking.

I'd rather pay the difference in gas for 500rpm than have to pay to regear 2 times.

I over looked the 5 speed part before. but I think I would still rather go 4.56's.
the ax15 has an over drive ratio of 0.79
the aw4 has an over drive ratio of 0.75
different yes but not my much at all.
with-
4.10 gears, 33 inch tire at 65 mph in 5th gear in ax15 woud be 2144 rpm
4.10 gears, 33 inch tire at 65 mph in 5th gear in aw4 would be 2035 rpm
4.56 gears, 33 inch tire at 65 mph in 5th gear in ax15 would be 2263 rpm
4.56 gears, 33 inch tire at 65 mph in 5th gear in aw4 would be 2384 rpm
so it would come out to be a 120 rpm difference at 65 mph. not a big deal either way, however i like more gearing when i can get it.
used specific trans gear ratio calculator on randysringsringandpinion.com http://www.ringpinion.com/Calc_RPM.aspx
I am not saying 4.10's are horibble, just think that 4.56's would leave the door open and not hurt a thing either. I work with somone who hase 36's and 4.56's on his wrangler (5sd) who wants 4.88's, and a guy who has stock 3.07's and 35's, he drives it everyday and doesn't bother him at all... a lot of it is opinion. but 4.56's wont hurt a thing.

I agree that 4.56 and 33 or 35 will work just fine for auto or stick. Helps when you are all loaded up and stuff.
I have a 92 and have run 4.88 with the aw4 for several years and its been fine even towing the boat or quads. I did have 37 for a bit and it was fine but could use more gear on hills and towing the only problem was stopping the 37's the brakes were a littlw week. I now run 36's and just changed to 5.38's and it perfect. Less effort to get going and seems to beetter mileage only got 300 miles so far.

4.88's, 37" tire at 65 is 2160rpm (a little low but good)
5.29's, 37" tire at 65 is 2342rpm (right where I would want it)
5.38's, 37" tire at 65 is 2382rpm (again right where I would want it)
but if your still running a D30 I would worry about pinion gear size after 4.88's. but you also shouldn't have a D30 and 37's lol
if you don't know If 37's are to big or not for you then 4.88's would be a good ground to go back to 35's with for DD or w/e. but more gear the better when pushing big tires (as long as your not over reving

CD, you have assumed that I'm running an auto, nope, I'm running the AX15, I'm also running 4.88s.
When I leave my house and hit the interstate I have mountain passes both east and west of me and the 4.88s with the 35s are great. 65 mph which is fast enough for me in a lifted rig running 35s is 2420 rpms, gives me decent mileage and I have all the power I need.
As for what Jeep put in my Cherokee for gear ratios, well they basically shot for middle of the road in building vehicles, and for some reason they must have figured that everyone that bought a manual Cherokee bought them solely for high mileage because 3.07 is a pos ratio.
As I said the 4.10s will work for the OP, but unless he lives somewhere flat the 4.56 gears will work better and if he goes to 35s he'll be ready with the 4.56s.
