Shift interlock cable removal problems
Im in the middle of an ax15 swap on my 95 jeep xj sport with an auto and I have searched everywhere about the shift interlock cable. How is is removed from the steering column? Is it possible to remove it without any problems like the key getting stuck from time to time? Do I just have to live with pulling they cable every time I shut my rig off? What have you guys done about this when doing a manual swap?

For temporary fix, could you pull it down at the tranny end and put a cable clamp on it to hold it until you find a way to remove it?
Would you need an entire steering column or maybe just the ignition switch tumbler from a manual?

I drove mine around my shop today with the cable still intact but disconnected.
The 5 speed is installed.
I see the rod going into the column and it does function with the cable but has no effect on anything in mine.

Would the key mechanism from a manual steering column fit in an auto steering column? I know that they are significantly different and I can't see that the mechanisms would be similar enough to make that work.
Constantine, is your cable still connected to the rod at the steering column? Mines still connected and every time I turn the key to start/run I gotta fidget with the cable to get it back to lock. I'll just clamp it with a small vise grip and hide it under the carpet for right now

Yes it is still connected to the rod and the rod functions properly if you pull the cable.
Mine seemed to only function if the key was off, I could not release the Automatic from park.
The ignition switch rod overlays it, once you open the ign switch, I can pull the cable.

I have had my shift interlock cable disco'd from the shifter side since I did a 97+ console swap. Zero issues. If you have access to a manual column, the process of swapping is not very difficult. but should be fine.
