You can replace the roof I dunno why people say you cant there like a big skin like a door skin there usually spot welded to braces on the inside. It's a gravy job for a bodyman cuz they get paid alot of hours and it's not that hard to put one on. Talk to a bodyshop about it they can direct you

 

A complete roof skin replacement would be a hell of a lot of work expecially for a carbed 84.... You would have to drill out every spot weld and chip away at all the seam sealer on a donar XJ, then do the exact same on yours. Welding it back on is the only way to get the body strong again, being a unibody vehicle the roof is somewhat a structural (sp?) part. I would just start with a better rig. You can find them cheap enough. I would rather replace floors and rockers than attempt a roof swap. Just my 2 cents.....good luck with your decision buddy.
