Default Replace GM 2.8L V6

I would like to replace the existing engine in my 1986 jeep Cherokee pioneer. I'm looking to go with an AMC 258 I6. However, to keep this conversion simple I would like to keep it carburated. I did alittle research and found some older CJ's came with a carburated I6 4.0L.

Has anyone looked into this engine, and is it a possible conversion? Also, how difficult is it to install a fuel injected inline 6 with all the computer components? So far, I'm thinking less is more.

I didn't think the 4.0 ever came with a carb, the 4.2 was carbed in the old cj's

I would just take the entire wiring harness and everything to go with it from a donor. A running donor should give you all the parts you need and make things a little simpler at the least

That's not going to be an easy swap. I'm pretty sure the firewall on the V6 models lacks the clearance needed for an inline 6. I could be wrong, but You might want to look into that. I also believe the radiator support is much closer toward the inside.

I think you may be correct on the firewall, but i've seen it done on a 2.5-4.0 conversion. If you have to do anything at all, i think you just have to hammer it out to fit (no idea how much however). Are you talking about how the radiator isnt inside the inner grill area ( like on the 2.5) but instead more open in the engine bay? If so it should be nothing more than taking the 4.0 mounts and putting it inside, im fairly certain thats what you do for a 2.5-4.0 swap. Pics in my profile to compare. Aso, dont take my opinion on this to heart this is mostly speculation.

Born with a 2.5

Now a 4.0 Lives under the hood.

Get a complete donor HO 4.0 Cherokee and do the transplant. you will need the radiator support so don't buy a donor that has been hit in the front. The firewall is the same ------No mod needed----
