I'm currently regearing my Dana 30 with new 4.88 gears and new 3.73 carrier with new bearings. From what I'm finding on the internet, it is making me question if my contact pattern is correct. Some info I find, it makes me think it's ok for new gears, others make me question it. Current setting is at- factory oil slinger between pinion gear and inner pinion bearing with no other shims. 18 in-lbs preload on pinion, 25 in-lbs with carrier installed, backlash set at .007"
My question is my pinion depth ok according to the contacted pattern or does it need adjusted?
I'd adjust it a little. But I'm a perfectionist. The contact patch should be centered on the tooth. Yours is "out" a little, suggesting you need to add a small adjustment shim.
Depth looks pretty good as far as I can tell so the carrier bearings are probably acceptable as-is.
You need to lower your pinion. You should be centered. It’s too far out. What was your original shim compared to what you have now? I’d drop it by a couple thousandths and recheck
edit: I just re-read and you have no shim?
The coast side pattern looks good but the drive side is too deep.
Needs to come out .003 to .005, in other words you will need to shorten the shim stack or move the pinion away from the ring gear.
So you have just the slinger in there?
That's weird, idk if you need the slinger w/ 4.88. Maybe just a shim.
Fyi, Yukon has a great installation manual that comes with all there r&p kits and install kits. I imagine you can go on there website to get it also.
Wow! a 4.88 in a 30, interesting.
Btw, your spinning the ring gear and putting slight drag on the pinion yoke with a rag or something when checking the pattern right? spinning the pinion instead of the ring gear will give you a goofy pattern.
