Default gear contact pattern

My first gear installs.Front Dana 30 4.56 reverse rotation. It had 4.56 to begin with but pinion teeth broke. Installed new ring and pinion. the pattern was at the root so I kept removing shims from the pinion race and now there's no shims behind the pinion race.
The backlash is round 5-6 thousands. Is this runnable?

The fist pick is drive and the second is coast

Ya that's what I was thinking. But there's no more shims to remove from under the race. All I could do is remove the inner oil slinger to bring the pinion back more.not sure if that's a good idea tho.

The sharp edge across the bottom of the pattern is a key indicator that the pinion is too deep.

Pull out about .010 and try it again.

Remember to wrap a shop towel around the yoke tightly before turning the ringgear. The additional tension is needed to get a pattwern on the ring gear.

Oops. Missed the shim removal part.

Looks like you need a thinner slinger.

DO NOT RUN A HP D30 WITHOUT A SLINGER.

Looks better. What did you set the backlash at? Is that all you adjusted or did you get a different slinger too?

Ya just adjusted backlash and took a dead blow hammer and tried to seat the pinion better.it did move hair. It moved the preloaded only a couple inch pounds. So is this runnable?

I ended up getting a thinner slinger and a new oil baffle. I put .005 behind the race and it still looked too deep so i took it out and this is my pattern now.
BL is .006
Drive

pinion is too close, if you had a nice rounded pattern on the toe and heel of each side it would be acceptable but they are sharp. depending on the brand of gear set the pinion is usually mark on the head of the pinion on what it was set up with from the factory , they are pre ran to check for noises and issues
