I use my jeep to take disabled hunters out in the woods to hunt. Provided they have a permit to use a vehicle as a blind. the problem is the people up front are roasting and the folks in the back are froze.. my 1996 had little plastic tubes that ran heat to the back, not sure if my 1998 does, but they were worthless either way. I was wondering if anybody has modified there heater box to put some heat to the back seats?
It should have the plastic piping that goes under the center console. If it does not they are easy to find at pick n pulls.
I agree they arent much good for heating the rear when most of the heat is coming out of the 2 sides up front. But what you can do is block off those two openings at the drivers and passengers feet. Then set the selector to floor and all the heat will come out the rear. If you need some heat out front set it to floor and defrost.
I did the opposite in my jeep. I cut a small block of styrofoam and wedged it in the opening for the rear tube then duck taped it shut. Now all my heat is up front.
I use the vent setting and point those dash vents upwards so heat does'nt blast me in the face. The 2 outside dash vents I point up and out, it helps keep my side window from fogging up on really cold days. The tube under center console hits the fixed louvers on back of center console and I think thats where the heat does'nt get dispersed very well in the back. That's an area to look at re aiming the heat back there. I suppose a guy could take a length of that flexible ducting and run it to the back where you want it. Might be ghetto looking but as long as your warm.
There is an outside chance that the routing under the console to the back might not be connected properly up front.
I took my console out to run some wiring in my '00 XJ.
When I did I noticed that the pipe was not really a tight fit in the front.
The foam that was in there was all deteriorated.
The foam was on the outside of the outlet under the dash.
I had some double sided foam tape lying around but trying to put it around the outside of that outlet proved challenging.
It was tight under there.
So I put it in the inside of the routing that runs under the console.

If you / they are all sitting there with the windows open, you could probably get away with a propane sunflower heater in the back. Just keep in mind that heat rises & it could start your headliner on fire. Also, a small fan to circulate the air in the back wouldn't be a bad idea. Don't forget to carry a fire extinguisher or two. I use a sunflower heater when ice fishing in the fish house.
