Just finished my swap (was forced to cause I blew the the LSD out and it was rattling).
Are you lifted? You may need to swap driveshafts. The 8.25 has a shorter factory shaft but mine mated up perfect with the d35 shaft sitting on an RE 3.5 full spring.
Also you will lose ABS. I just cut the wires up by the body and called it done. (Still need to pull fuses/relays to turn off the dash light)

You should be ok leaving the driveshaft and just replacing the axle then.
I'll 2nd the fact that soaking bolts is critical. I prefer PB Blaster but I'm sure others work fine.
Also, my parking brake connection/splitter (not sure of technical name) was seized. Used an adjustable wrench to grab the body of the splitter and then a closed end wrench on the nut with a second wrench looped on the end of the first for leverage.
