All depends on what you do. If you play in the mud or light trails then you can make smaller axles survive on larger tires.
But, if you play in the rocks or need to get a little throttle heavy to make it up some obstacles. ...then it's only a matter of time

Right and thats what I wanna avoid. Mainly cuz I play in the rocks some.

About the overkill of a 14B. One thing I noticed when I first started offroad a couple years ago: I had a D30/D35 combo, lift, the same tires as all my buddies and only the factory posi in the rear. I didn't have any armor at all. Sometimes I could get up obstacle others struggled with. My theory is because mine was much lighter. This makes me learn towards slight over-building but not super overkill. Anyway, just a thought.

Who knows. I just goggled it and found a few references to that weight. You know how the internet is, someone guesses about something once, it is repeated a million times and eventually becomes a fact.

you're right about being light weight. but if you're going 1 ton, a 14b rear still weighs less than a front 60 with steering and everything. if you're going 1 ton the 14 bolt is just undisputable. especially because of the crazy diff clearance when shaved. plus the weight keeps your tires firmly planted on the ground
lightweight is great, but lets face it unless you're building a race car or a buggy it's not worth it to sacrifice weight for strength when it wont make a HUGE difference.
I figure my rig will weigh 1500lbs more than my last one, but I wont be carrying 800lbs in spare parts. I figure it evens out some

yeah. I know a sterling weights 445 or so. I think the 60 has gotta be close to that
