Default Rear Axle Questions

I just bought a really beat 89 cherokee lifted 6.5in on newer 33in mud tires. The rear end is a 8.25 that growls really badly during deceleration. What would be an easy swap (dont want to screw with gearing if i dont have to!) I wanna wheel it soon however i dont wanna run the risk of it blowing up on a trail.

x2. what is your current ratio?
another option is to buy an already geared 4.10 hpd30 off CL or NAXJA and buy a junk yard 4.10 limited slip 8.8
killer setup especially if you got stick shift and are ready to commit to the ultimate upgrades

Any automatic should have the same gears. You could swap in another 8.25, a Dana 44 or if you wanted to gamble a bit you can go to a Dana 35(most common). The 8.25 is longer so if you go to a Dana 35 you might need a longer drive shaft.

Do you know why it's howling though? It could be a number of things that might not need replacing. Is it locked? Do you have a slip yoke eliminator on your transfer case?
