Sorry, I was all set to put a lunchbox up front. Do I need to start the research all over again. Emptypockets your from the same area as I am, so you know our weather sucks is yours a daily DD. Hows the road manners in the winter? Do you have to engage the front diff at slightest bit of ice? I know its alot but for cryin out loud it snowed this morning.

I have a Aussie lunch box Locker in the rear, had one up font for a while but it didn't do good in the snow and ice, i live in Alaska trust me on the ice thing. That's why i went selectable on the front. With a lunch box locker on the front, when you drive on real snowy or icy roads. The locker wont get enough traction to pop the locker free so it can ratchet the outer tire,so it stays locked most of the time. You end up with a snow plow feeling like you have a plow on the front of your jeep plowing the parking lot. It will take real wide turns and kinda get a lose feeling at times in the snow. Don't get me wrong lunch box locker up front will work in snow just kinda watch how you drive

I am assuming you had the 4 wheel drive engaged at that time, otherwise isn't the front going to slip like it is supposed too?.. until it is in 4WD?... or am I completely not understanding how these things work?... I thought that even if you have a LBL/spartan up front, it doesn't lock (even with throttle) unless you have the 4WD engaged... am I wrong about this? (I have the np231 full time 4WD in case that makes a difference)

Lunch box lockers like spartan, aussie, lock right. Are always locked when under throttle. When you let off the gas it allows the center pin to shift a little letting the locker to pop open just a touch to let it ratchet and click,Allowing the outer tire of the turn to spin faster then the inner. But when you give it gas it will lock back up,in a turn or not. and yes i was in four wheal drive but that wouldn't make a dif with these kind of lockers they use the traction of the street to help it ratchet. when on ice and snow,,and i mean lots of snow..not just a dusting where you can still see pavement its hard for it to get traction to let it open or like i say pop open..
Here i found this,,,it should help this how all lunch box lockers work
this is what they sound like

I've got an Aussie in the rear of my XJ. I ha a lock right in the rear of my f150 (which was my daily driver until I sold it). On an auto, the Aussie/lock right operates smoother than on a manual. In the manual, generally your gonna want to have the clutch disengaged when your turning on pavement or not touch the clutch or gas when turning.
I've put 40,000 miles between the two lockers over the last 2 years and I haven't ever had an issue with them driving in snow, sand, ice, rock, drifting around corners (dirt and asphalt). I will say that if your gonna be doing any driving in snow, don't put an automatic locker up front cause if you engage 4wd it's gonna do some weird stuff that might put ya in the ditch when you try and turn…
Here's a vid I made a few years ago with the lock right vs a g80. The ratcheting is loud but I could barely hear it over the exhaust (which wasn't that loud) and the stereo. In the xj I can't even hear it with the radio off.

I agree with emptypockets, with Vacuum-Disconnect Dana 30. a lunch box locker isn't doing anything till you engage 4wd. But Motiv8er's profile says he has a 92 xj, and if its still stock.
All stock 92-99 xj's have the Non-Disconnect High-Pinion Dana 30, and 84-91 had the Vacuum Disconnect Dana 30, also 2000-2001 have a Low-Pinion Dana 30,which is identical to the Dana 30 used in the TJ 97 and later Wranglers that is also a non-disco
