Default Re-gearing

I want to re-gear my XJ. I have a Chrysler 8.25 rear axle and a Dana 30 or 35 front (I don't know how to tell the difference) I want to re-gear both to 4.88. I have no idea what to buy or where to buy it so any information is helpful. It would be great if someone could tell me how to tell the difference between a D30 and D35. Thanks

35 is a rear axle and 30 is a front for starters. Gears are not an easy install and if you don't know what you're doing you'll ruin them and they aren't cheap. Plan on 400+ for parts and 600+ for installation. Several specialty tools used to install them and everything is in thousandths of an inch and you cannot be off. Better off letting someone who knows what they are doing do the work.

This link shows several Jeep differentials. It shows the 35, but not the 30.

Rangers have a d35 front axle lol seriously though, xjmarc is spot on. Gearing is not something to mess around with. If you don't even know what axle you have, you definitely aren't ready to do a gear job. Pay someone to do it right the first time.

How did you decide on that ratio?

Rangers do come with a D35 front TTB axle but it's not a solid axle and didn't want to confuse him. If you want to get technical Jeeps never came with a Dana 35 but a Spicer Model 35, the baby sister to the M20 found in CJs and FSJs.

Why didn't you want to go 4.88 on a DD?
