Depends on what gears you have. I think 4.10s maybe and numerically higher you have to. I didn't have to with 3.07s. But did with 4.88s.

I had to take the ring gear off with my old 3.55's. Did not take the ring gear off for my friends 3.07's

You can simply shave the corner of one tooth on the gear to get the pin out . It will hit two teeth on one side, one tooth on the opposite. Shave the one tooth. Doesn't hurt a thing.

Same thing i did, carrier stayed in the d30. I barely shaved down one tooth to sneak the pin out...and i only had to pull back the drivers side axle as well, passenger side didn't get touched.
