Oh yeah, so the right way to do it... Cut the 20g Red Fog Lamp Relay #1 ground/trigger wire at the back of the driver's side headlight plug. Extend this wire using your preferred method so that it is long enough to reach your new aftermarket high beam relay. Splice it into the 87 pin (output) of your new high beam relay. If you have two 87's (which is ideal), either one is OK. Do not however use 87a if your relay has it!
FWIW, I had this fog light/high beam issue and the above recommendation solved my issue. However I wanted to provide a bit of clarification for anyone using the putco wiring harness.
Instead of running a wire from the 18ga RED all the way back to the relay itself, you can tap in to the Putco BLUE 14ga wire that you've already run to the driver's side headlight. A photo is attached.
Notice in the photo that I've cut the 18ga RED. I then proceeded to cut the 14ga BLUE in that photo and spliced both sides of the BLUE and the switch-side of the RED together with a crimped bell connector. Now the lights all function correctly.
Thanks again, Earl!

Hello everyone . I'm new to this site and finding it a fit to the direction I'm heading with my rig. (99xj) I'm trying a different approach than on my last clouged together half*** build. The new rig is completely stock and low miles. Hope to plan out before lots of needless spending. Started with complete tune up. Dropped in an odyssey 34/78 battery and upgrade the factory battery (+&-) cables to #4 with buss fuse. Soon to add aux fuse block. Figuring out a plan for the cooling system presently.
Today my question to everyone is Headlights. Like the old chevys.... inferior light harness, must upgrade. I've looked at Putco and others online and skeptical about quality. The ARB IS pricy and proprietary with relays.
Does anyone know a good mid-range?
I have factory running lights which need to work with headlights. (Shut off when flipping on HB's)
To top it all off, so I can get down to the grit of it.... I want to use my LED truck lights from my old jeep.
My reasons for the harness upgrade is if I brake an LED out in the way out there. I can put in any H4 bulb from where ever I can find one.
I've read a lot of threads about this subject and just want to check if there's any new creative updates to this.
If I end up with new winch bumper I'd still like to use the running/fog lights as factory set up.
Sure hope some of y'all can share some insight! Thanks much!
And there you are agin. Thanks Cruiser ! I should be getting my mean lemons tomorrow.
Does this harness address the running lights a little clearer? Do you have an idea how the running light relay would be affected if I used LED for them as well as headlights.
If you have a 97+ Jeep Cherokee XJ with FACTORY FOG LIGHTS. You MAY or MAY NOT run into the issue of your headlights not switching back to low beam after clicking on the High Beams and having to turn your lights off/on again for it to correct itself.
If this is you, please do not worry, here is a simple fix for the situation:
Cut the 20g Red Fog Lamp Relay #1 ground/trigger wire at the back of the driver's side headlight plug. Extend this wire so that it is long enough to reach your new aftermarket high beam relay. Splice it into the 87 pin (output) of your new high beam relay. Do not however use the 87a pin on the relay.
You are now fixed and ready to click between high and low whenever you would like!
Can anyone tell me where the factory fog light relay is located on my 99 XJ? Would rather not go this route but I'm not confident that I will cut/splice the correct red and blue wire. Plus my fog lights haven't worked for a few months anyways...thanks for the help.

Two of them in the fuse box in the engine compartment.
Thanks! Pulled the fog light relay and that fixed the high beam issue. Now to figure out why my fog lights quit working in the first place and get them to work WITH the upgraded harness...
