I'm going to do a sye in the next month or so. I just need to know what the grinding noise is coming from and if it will be safe to drive a couple hundred miles next weekend.

I found this picture and this is NOT what mine looks like. The diff is angle up towards the DS. Should I shim it to be parallel like the picture? I think I could do this during the week if I can get some shims.

I will of course measure and get the exact amount of angle needed.

Anybody know how much angle you get when you do a t-case drop? Im thinking of adding some spacers as a temp fix until I get the sye.

I know that a 1" TC drop solved my vibe issues with a 3" lift.

Bringing this one back up. I've got a 95 and I'm experiencing the exact same issues as the OP is describing. Any update on what fixed it?

I went to the hardware store got some longer bolts and two nuts per stud and did a make shift t-case drop about 1". The grinding was coming from the slip yoke riding to low on the splines. I lubed the slip yoke with anti seeze. I beleive on a 95 the slip yoke is lubricated from the t-case fluid. I am going to do a sye and taller motor mounts and that should fix everything.

When i was under the truck i could move the slip yoke. I would check for play in the slip yoke. There should be NO play. Good luck

Yep, there's play in the slip yoke, while everything else is perfectly tight. At least now I know what the problem is. I guess I'll make a t-case drop like you did and start looking for a SYE. Thanks for responding!

Thanks! I'm just starting to research. I was just going to do a HNT SYE, but after some research, it looks like since I have a 95, there's no cost benefit. I'm not really looking forward to taking the T-case out and apart, but I'm not sure there's any way around it. I'll do the t-case drop as a band-aid till I get the time (and space) to do the SYE. Had your longer bolts with two nuts method worked alright so far? What size bolts did you get (if you recall)

Also, what made you chose the Advance Adapters kit?

Had the very same problem after my 3 inch lift. My case was very bad, I couldn't leave my foot in a comfortable place on the gas! Threw in a 1 inch tcase drop and it doesn't even vibrate anymore. Temporary relaxing.

Did you shim the axle too?

Nope, the sound was from the transfer case so I didn't need to. I had some vibrations pretty much under all acceleration but it seems to be fixed too.

Bunch of people around the interwebz are posting this saying you have to make sure the angles are the same. If you drop the case, you'd have to shim the axle to make sure they're parellel. I'm just wondering how critical this is. I have ZERO vibes, just a really gnarly noise when on/off throttle above 35. I want to make sure I don't damage anything permanently.

Petrolhead:
I measured the angles on mine and it was 5° off. Lowering the t-case 1 inch changed it to 4°. So i think in theory i can put a 4° axle shim and it will be perfect. I got the angle tool from sears for like $10.

Also check and make sure the u-joints aren't hitting

Advanced adapters has a youbtube video showing the instal. Very helpful. I just pulled out a bolt and went to ace and got one that was a inch longer. Then i got two nuts thatvwere just a bit larger so they slid over the bolt. I will look and see but i dont think i have the part numbers. Ive had it on for a month and its held up good for a bandaid. I still get grinding but the t-case drop eliminated 90% of it.

Ahhhhh makes sense. I'm going to do the same.

Biggest issue for me is that I don't really have the time or space to pull the transfer case. Any idea if it can be done without pulling the transfer case?
