NV3550 swap guides
I am looking to eventually do an AW4 --> stick swap in my '01 Sport. I was told that the NV3550 is a better transmission to the AX-15 and was wondering where I could find a guide for this swap? I see a lot of AX-15 swap guides, but not one for the 3550. Is there a better standard transmission than the AX-15 or the NV3550 out there? I eventually want to put a BMW m57 or another such engine in once my 4.0 goes in a few years.

Some people think that because the 3550 is newer that it's better. Some think that because the ax15 is made by a aisin that IT'S better.
Neither are better, but that's my opinion. They're both great.
That being said, the install for both is the same. You have a pile of parts to get, and once you have everything it's not just bolt in. You have to cut a hole in the firewall for the clutch master cylinder, the reverse lights have to get wired to the NSS, the clutch switch has to get wired as the park switch, etc. There's a few fairly comprehensive writeups out there about how to swap to a manual. If you find one for an AX15, it's the same as for the NV3550.

I found my discussion from when I swapped mine.
I used a 1990 transmission in a 98. It made things a little more complicated. Mostly because the pilot bearings are completely different. They changed the O.D. and I.D. in 1992.
The absolute worst part about swapping in a 5 speed is the pedals. It was pretty awful.

Neither is superior, but that is just my view. They're both fantastic.
However, the installation process is the same for both. You've got a lot of components to buy, and once you do, it's not just a matter of bolting them in. The clutch master cylinder must be installed through a hole in the firewall, the reverse lights must be linked to the NSS, the clutch switch must be wired as the park switch, and so on. There are a couple reasonably detailed writeups on how to switch to a manual out there. It's the same as the NV3550 if you locate one for an AX15.
