np242 to a np231

np242 to a np231
im goin to lock the front of my rig soon and i have the np242 tc ...i picked up a np231 with a sye at a great price other than a drive shaft(im havein one made)what eles do i need to do the swap if any thing.... ita a 1990 4.0 tranny is aw4 thanks for the help

well im in the middle of a 5spd swap and first thing i can tell you is count your splines, the AW4 output was 21spline and i would assume the NP231 came off of an AX15 which is a 23spline output so if you do have a 23 spline NP231 your going to need to do an input shaft swap on the 231.
the exception would be if it was behind a 4cyl as it would then be 21spline
secondly depending on which year the 231 came out of it will have a different sending unit for the 4WD lights. Early[up to 91/92 IIRC] XJ/YJs with 231 had the vacuum actuated axle, the XJs with the 4.0L/AW4/NP242 like yours is not vacuum actuated and simple has a 2wire sending unit for the 4WD lights.now i havent checked to see if the sender from the 242 will fit in the 231 case as i simply grabbed the 2wire sender from a 94 cherokee that had a 231 with the rest of my donor parts

yep, count the splines and make sure ts the right length. some has short, medium or long input shafts. other then that i believe everything else swaps over. I am putting a NP231 in my Cherokee tomorrow, removing the 242 as well. but mine is a 2000 so a little different.
