Noises and issues I can't indentify!!
Hey all,
I've been having issues with my rig involving vibrations and a strange clunk noise.
Specs:
1995 XJ, 4.0, AW4,NP231
6.5" RC Short Arm
SYE
Tom Woods rear shaft
Drop pitman arm
Adj. trackbar
No pinion shims
No TC Drop
Adjustable control arms
Vibration...
I only get this vibration under acceleration between 20mph-30mph. It gets pretty rough, I feel it in the steering wheel, seat, floor, and it shakes everything...NOT DEATH WOBBLE. It won't do it if it's just rolling along(ex. in neutral or down a hill)
Things Ive tried:
New balljoints
Rotate tires & check pressures
All new steering components(new bushing in trackbar & joint for it, draglink, tie rod)
Took off front driveshaft & drove it
Greasing joints
Running sway bar & no sway bar
Clunk....
I notice this usually going over defined bumps(potholes, sewer covers, changes in the road). I also can get it do it occasionally when I sit parked and turn the wheel full lock to full lock both ways. I can only do that maybe once or twice though. It sounds like it's coming from the driver's side front area, unsure where though(We'll say the front left corner of the Jeep).
Things I've checked/replaced:
All above things^^
Steering linkage feels tight
Steering box is tight/no movement
Trackbar bracket doesn't pivot or anything when steering
Didn't see the control arms pushing around or anything when steering
If anyone can help me with this, I'd appreciate it greatly!!!

I can't say much about the vibration noise, but the clunking might just be your four wheel drive linkage knocking around beneath you, the bearing seizes up over the years and the linkage clunks around, check that. There is a kit at dealerships specifically meant for it, or you can go here: http://www.jeep4x4center.com/shift-c...5014148aa.html
Hope that helps.

Thank you for the reply! I actually converted over my 4wd linkage to something similar to the BSFab design that uses a couple rods and heim joints.

Update...I found the vibration issue. Something related to the rear shaft. So, I re-greased it and mounted it again, no vibration.
As for the clunk, I did manage to find the track bar bracket was indeed moving..so I welded it to the "frame". No more pop at a stand-still...but that damn clunk is still there!
It's become more defined now since I've done some repairs(welded trackbar bracket, new balljoints, track bar bushings & rod end).
It happens when going over defined bumps on the driver side.
Ideas?!
