Default New Motor

Well just found out I need around 2k motor work done to my 96 xj. Instead of doing that I am looking into just getting a different motor. What swaps over without any mods.

1991 and on 4.0's are the H.O. engines. 91-96 will be a direct swap, 97-99 don't have the water temp gauge sender in the head like the earlier engines do. You can not use an engine from 99+ WJ or TJ, the accessory bolt locations are totally different. So you can use a 4.0 from a 93-96 ZJ and a 91-96 XJ without any needed mods, and an engine from a 97-98 ZJ or a 97-99 XJ with a slight mod for the temp sender.

Is there any gain in using a zj motor instead of a xj? And if my jeep is a 96 would a newer motor give me any gain?

The ZJ and XJ engines are the same. The 96 and newer bottom ends are stronger. A 99+ intake and Neon injectors may give a slight increase in power.

You said 2k in engine work... Who's doing the work you or a shop? And what needs to be done?

Nope. Just very easy to find. Nearly a million engines were made that you can swap as a bolt-in.

Front and rear oil seal and rear transmission seal Valve cover gasket and new power steering lines and the back rotors are leaking

Its a rough estimate of what it would e including service charge since i don't have the correct equipment to do it

Find another shop and get a second opinion. Those guys are over charging.
