Default Need new cam for 4.0 XJ

The past few months of trial and error I've been chasing down an elusive cyclinder 5 misfire. Long story short, I pull out the cyl 5 lifters and the cam grinded one so badly there is a hole clean through. I'm sure this means my cam is wiped. I've been doing research and all I see is "extreme" cams, I just want something modest. Any recommendations?

2000 XJ 4.0 fuel injected.

Damn, my stepfather said the same about the bearings. I've gotten this far, is replacing the cam and bearings that much of a leap in difficulty? 🤒😭

Your cam filed down your tappet.

All those filings went somewhere.

And don't tell me about the filter.......doesn't catch everything.

Problem you got is you are going to spend $400 for cam with tappets......gaskets........oil.......coolant..... .timing set....etc.......

And if you lose a rod 2K miles from now........you'll spend it again+++++++++++

I changed the oil and filter not even a month ago (it sat since then) and I saw no shavings. Which is why I didn't catch it till now. But you're right, it has to be somewhere.

These are the parts I already bought and intended to install before finding out my cam went south today.

rebuilt head
head bolts
Headgasket
Manifold gasket
Header
Manifold bolts
O2 sensors
Push rods
Lifters
Water pump / thermostat gasket
Belt
injectors
Coolent temp sensor
Coilpack

So you can see I'm already knee deep in this lol.

Perhaps I should drop the pan and check for shavings? Then find a cam (still need recommendations) and bearings. Is there anything else I'm forgetting?

It's been a long couple of months my friend!

With the oil pan off, cam out, can I install the new barrings from the bottom up? Engine in the jeep.

This will be my first cam swap and I'm learning this all today.

It would be way easier to do cam bearings with it pulled. You gotta make sure the oil port is lined up. Not to mention to get the old bearings out, at least the last one, you would have to redo the plug on pack of block. Impossible while transmission is on it.
