This happened to my step-sister on stock tires while driving down the highway. I wish I had the picture of the exploded carrier on my laptop. 114k on the axle when it did this. I have very little faith in those axles.

in all seriousness I wanted the same "look" when I got my jeep too... then I actually drove it and enjoyed playing around on these old farm roads..
I'm going 3.5 super flex from Rubicon express will FULL leaf packs.
31" Goodyear Authority A/t's with matching spare (road hazzard coverage and still being a dd was a major factor in my choice I'm still open to tire suggestions)
black steelies with correct back spacing
(can't remember off hand if track bar mount was included but if not adjustable trackbar)
I'm also going to service the differentials and trans/transfer and add a trans temp gauge (maybe overkill but I like to play it safe)
trans cooler just because
that's how I plan to run it for awhile.. my next plans would then be to do coil spacers and shackles with a SYE and put on 33's and gear it.
I "Think" my plans seem sensible..

Sorry that happened to your step sister. But you can throw up a picture of a broken Dana 60 that was on stock tires. It does not mean Dana 60's are bad. In fact it falsely gives others the idea that a certain axle is junk when its not.

^^ pretty sure the rate of failure is different. and a factory xj axle would be more prone to failure esp. when a guy asks 'how big of a tire can i fit on my xj?'

That's like saying just because one person posted about having trouble with the rear upper shock bolts, doesn't mean they don't break. You're falsely giving people the idea that they commonly break. So go ahead and don't be cautious of them.

not sure where this thread has headed, seems to be a lot of chatter. i have 33" x 12.5 with a 3" lift and cut fenders / bump stops. flexs good but im adding another 1 3/4" lift boost (coils and shakles). if you are set on 33's, dont ***** foot around with 30" or 31" to "get a feel for it", unless you are VERY tight with money. you can find good used tires and lifts are'nt that expensive. wheeling is sic, your gonna love it, save some money, get a 4.5 or 3" to start and boost it like i am later and rock some 33". IMO, cut fenders look sic too, way more agressive but a little heart score... oh and dont go being an idiot and beating your truck to pieces, no matter what you have, it will break at some point. D30 - 8.25 is plenty strong for 33"s if your not throttle crazy through rocks.

Hmmm how many people throwing up pictures like that will it take before it will be safe to say that axle is junk in general?

Says who? I have worked on a buttload stock XJ/ZJ's with 35's due to issues mostly bearing related. Besides this forum consist primarily of "wheelers". Your point is futile considering the 35 is under alot stress when larger then stock tires are added and heavy torque from low range is applied.

this has gotten way off course, and the question was sufficiently answered.
