Need Help w/ Tail Light Guard Install!
OK - I know these guards are really not much protection at all (or maybe even worse) but I found these used Smitty guards and I do want to try them out.
They are both identical (same right and left) with 3 mounting tabs. Do they screw into the taillight themselves and one screw into the body?
No matter how I position these I still can't close the rear hatch. Is there a chance these belong on a 97 on rather than a 96?
Thanks guys!

Here are two pictures of XJs with the same guards.... Hmmm..... I know that I am really close here. Maybe I need to cut these down and modify them a little bit. No one has ever seen these???
The ones you posted are missing the tab on the side that goes to the body on yours. These are the 97 up ones https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f11/xj...01-sold-71000/

I think these guys are the only ones still making taillight guards for the XJ.

That's a matter of opinion.
Out of the the options shown for that style of taillight "guard" it's the only one that actually follows the contours of the 97+ taillights. All of the other ones shown would fit the slimmer taillight like socks on a rooster.
Nevertheless, the point is that I believe that these guys are the only ones still producing the wire-type guard for XJs. Whether they look good or not. You don't have to like them, I was just simply trying to provide an answer for XJnumero3's question.
That being said, the better option IMHO would be to replace the taillights with steel taillight boxes. JCR offers these in conjuction with their rear 1/4 panel armor or as a stand-alone box. I am not a fan of their light selection for their boxes however and would prefer blank boxes so as to be able to choose my own LED format/size and placement.
