So a separate trans cooler would be better, or does the stock one in the radiator work alright for occasional towing?

A separate one is way better....not only for towing but just driving in general....the stock one is sub par even for daily driving in my opinion.

So I can just go to the JY, find the biggest trans cooler I can wedge in front and splice it in on the output side of the stock cooler in the radiator? Doesn't seem too hard, and well worth the $15 from the JY.

PS: Hopefully helping you out OP, not meaning to thread jack...

I would just bypass the stock cooler all together. The lines can be taken off and put onto a cooler...the radiator will not leak anything. I suppose you could technically over cool it but I don't think that's real likely.
