Need help asap

I just finished putting a new cam new head gasket i aligned the 2 marks on the cam and crank gear dead on i go to start it it wont start but when i retard the timing by setting the spark plugs back one spot from the factory location its starts and jumps to 3k rpm what i cant figure out is how to retard the timing on the distributor because when the plug wires are in the factory location it wont start but retarding then one spot it starts i really need this thing to run pleaae any advice would help
