Sense i got my jeep whatever I'm driving it and one of the rear tire loses traction I hear a very loud metal on metal grinding sound towards the front of the jeep. Almost found the graph to metal gears were grinding together. Five done the front and rear differential fluid and the transfer case fluid all had like metal plate in them but I sint know if I was the first one to change the fluid in 180k due to no good information from the previous owner. Please please help I am out of ideas and I am really tired of this sound!

With the information you've given us, it sounds like you need to take it to a shop.

 

^ Best idea to find the problem then if it's something you can fix do so if not have someone else do it for you.^

sounds like your t-case is not adjusted right. But you never told us what case you are working with. Update your info with the year trans, t-case and any mods to the jeep and we will be able to help you better.

What he's saying is that when one of his rear tires loses traction he hears a terrible metal to metal grinding noise from the front. He's changed the fluid in the front and rear ends, as well as the transfer case. He noticed metal shavings in each of them during the course of the fluid changes.

He's pretty sure that he's been the first one to change said fluids, but isn't positive because the PO is a bit of a **** and isn't giving reliable information in regards to the maintenance his Jeep received beforehand.

What I want to know is if the vehicle is in four wheel drive when this noise occurs.

 

adjust shift linkage

if it is off, it can put the tcase partially in gear when it shouldn't be....and can cause grinding noises and problems similar to what you describe

 

Sorry for all the grammar errors. I used talk to text because the keyboard on my phone is messed up. It is when the jeep is a 2 Wheel Drive. I brought it to a shop twice and they have charged me both times to inspect the jeep and find nothing wrong with it. ive asked Dozens of people but no one ever has a good idea on what it is everyone told me to resort to forms.

It is a 2001 Jeep Cherokee with a 2 inch lift on 31x10.5x15. I forgot which trans case it is but I know that it is the one with the Allen wrench drain plug and not the huge bolt drain plug.

 

On the shift indicator does yours have 2H 4H N 4Lo then you have a 231. If it has 2H 4H 4Ft N 4Lo then you have a 242. I would pull the front drive shaft and take it for a spin. It still sounds like the case is not fully engaged in 2wd. There are plenty of write ups on how to adjust the shift linkage on the case. I would not bring it the shop anymore if they could not figure this out.
